The Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) has released the 2025 Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) examination results. A total of 35,366 candidates sat for the 2025 BGCSE compared to 36,917 in 2024, which shows a decrease of 4.20%. There were 22,930 (59.18%) female candidates and 14,436 (40.82%) male candidates.
The grades available at this level are on the scale of A* to G, where A* represents the highest level of performance and G the lowest level of performance. Candidates failing to reach the minimum requirement for Grade G are assigned letter U, and those who do not meet the requirements for grading for various reasons, including absence, are assigned Letter X.
The twenty-one (21) BSSE subjects were assessed for the first time, leading to significant changes in the assessment structure, suggesting that comparison of performance with previous cohorts will not be applicable.
BGCSE 2025 Points System
The BGCSE is a syllabus-based qualification with no aggregation; however, to gauge the performance of candidates at the system level, two measures of reporting are used, the cumulative percentage of key grades awarded nationally and the proportion of candidates by numeric aggregate for the six (6) best syllabuses following the point system adopted by the Department of Tertiary Education Financing (DTEF).
